Smallest hard drive with a big future

As the need for smaller and more compact equipment with a larger data storage capability increases, so the need for smaller hard disk drives becomes greater. To answer this need Toshiba previously developed their range of 1.8” ATA embedded hard disk drives that were the smallest hard disk drives on the market.

The maximum storage facility was 20GB but Toshiba continually developed the range, with larger capacity HDD’s available soon after.

FFC connectors

Interest in these 1.8” HDD’s has been high and they have already been utilised in some Toshiba notebooks and also the Apple I-Pod, but it is only a matter of time before their use becomes much more widespread. Typical applications for these HDD’s include MP3 players, handheld PC’s and notebooks and also mobile data storage equipment.

To ensure that Toshiba had a suitably reliable range of connectors to accompany their HDD’s, Fujikura DDK were selected to design and develop these connectors in consultation with Toshiba’s Engineers. The connector range that was developed by Fujikura DDK is their MCD-D range, which is surface mount with either 44 or 50 contacts (to facilitate a HDD slave and master set up). The female connector is fitted to the HDD and the Male connector, which is available in various height options, is fitted to the mating equipment.

The latest developments have seen HDD sizes reduce to 1.0” and the smallest being 0.85”. Fujikura DDK has continually developed connection solutions for these HDD’s, the later of which being FFC connectors. These FFC connectors will allow connection from FFC, built into the HDD, to PCB. Fujikura DDK’s range is extensive and offers FFC connection from 4 to 80 way. The competitive advantage of these connections solutions from DDK is that in some ranges, the physical connection to the FFC is to both top and bottom contacts, meaning design and solution is now more flexible.
