A new Ethernet Passive Optical Network solution is set to fill a gap in the access market, providing a low cost alternative with data rates up to 200 times faster than existing ADSL.
A unique Passive Optical Network solution from Fujikura Europe Ltd is destined to plug the current gap in the European market in data communications equipment. Launched this month, the Half-Gigabit Ethernet PON module is the first of its kind in Europe, giving service providers an increased competitive edge in supplying data communications to domestic customers.
The E-PON Optical Line Terminal, FNP 2101, and Fujikura’s Optical Network Unit FNP5003, delivers broadband Ethernet communications over a passive optical network structure. The system provides a high subscriber density over four PON ports, with a 20km range and 28dBm link budget, the Half-Gigabit E-PON is a unique solution that gives greater versatility to system architecture for the network designer and at a very competitive price.
“The FNP 2101 module offers the best balance between data-rate and dispersion constraints,” explains Simon Richardson, Product Manager . “This is a far more cost effective option for our customers than conventional E-Pon systems, allowing us to utilise lower cost components, whilst still providing a best effort broadband connection that is still 200 times the data rate of existing DSL broadband connections.”
The Half-Gigabit E-PON system incorporates redundant power supplies to minimise system downtime and supplies 128 users over four PON cards. Fujikura Europe is planning to implement a complete demo system of this particular E-PON solution at their head offices later this summer. “This will be an ideal opportunity for our customers to evaluate the system for their specific applications,” commented Simon. “With over 10,000 units being sold outside Europe already, the Half-Gigabit E-PON is a system based on extensive, field proven technology which offers a unique and cost effective broadband solution.”
Fujikura Europe Ltd will be showcasing the Half-Gigabit E-PON module at the ECOC exhibition this year.
