Photovoltaics are expected to play a key role in the future of our power generation. Today's solar technology is based on semiconductor p-n junction technology. Although this technology is widely used and has been highly successful, Si based solar cells are very expensive and the performance or efficiency of such cells have a theoretical limit. From new thin film technology which reduces solar cell costs to multi-layer silicone cells which improve  performance, there has been lots of research into the future of solar power. There has however been one invention which has looked into completely new ideas and mimics the most efficient solar technology known to man, photosynthesis.

For the past few years now Fujikura have become part of the research into this new, so called 'artificial photosynthesis' solar cell otherwise known as the Dye sensitized solar cell.  The concept of the Dye sensitized solar cell, or DSSC was first invented in 1991 by professor Gräezel and Dr O'Regan in Switzerland.

How DSSC works:

DSSC technology is based on a photoelectrochemical process which uses specialized dyes to absorb and convert energy from the sun into an electrical current. Below you can see the typical structure of a DSSC

   As seen above, DSSC modules are based on specialized dye's which coat nanoparticles of TiO. These dyes are what absorb the sun's energy (Much like Chlorophyll in plants) and excite electrons in the dye. These electrons are then transmitting into the TiO nanoparticles. The circuit of flowing electrons in then closed by a chemical electrolyte which then enables a current to flow through the DSSC module and create the electrical energy needed to power a light bulb or similar device.

 The dye used in a DSSC is vital to its operation. Dyes can be optimized to absorb light from much wider ranges in the spectrum or be highly specialized just for absorbing energy from the sun or from an indoor artificial light source.

Advantages of the DSSC:

The specialized design and dyes used in a DSSC module give it the following benefits over conventional solar cells:

  • They can still generate energy at extremely low light conditions making them perfect for indoor applications.
  • DSSC modules can be specialized to absorb light from indoor LED or fluorescent light sources.
  • The simple chemical concepts used in a DSSC means that they can be made very easily and at a low cost.
  • The eco-friendly materials used are both cheap and abundant ensuring a stable future production.
  • The manufacturing techniques used means that the shape of the DSSC module is very flexible and can be made to customer designs.

We do however have 2 standard products which highlight the high performances possible with our modules

  • 'Credit card' sized, 4 cell module. Specialized for hig performance in indoor light conditions (Indoor DSC).
  • 'Passport' sized, 8 cell module. Specialized for high performance in outdoor light conditions (Outdoor DSC).
